Facility Assessment Graphics
As part of the facility assessment for a Twin Cities private school master plan, I collaborated closely with our firm’s Senior Building Performance Analyst to help ensure that the incredibly valuable data they were finding for the client’s existing facilities was visually legible to those without a technical or scientific background. I also advocated for the inclusion of short explanatory summaries of various terms, to ensure that every stakeholder was able to clearly understand the findings in order to be able to actively participate in planning conversations. These strategies have been so successful that they’ve since been used in projects across the firm.
While many indoor environmental quality indicators can be objectively measured and monitored in data points, many of these also have crucial subjective indicators that are key to ensuring that occupants are comfortable, healthy, and productive. Combining both subjective data (occupant comfort surveys) and objective data (light / temperature / humidity / acoustic measurements, etc) is crucial to fully understand how indoor environments are functioning and how best to improve them.
These simple explanations and research summaries were added to floor plans showing IEQ measurement results in order to provide helpful context for why these measurements are important to their staff and students’ well-being. Simple graphs were also created that clearly and simply report occupant comfort survey results at a glance.
Existing Facility Assessment
As part of a facility assessment process for White Bear Lake school district, our goal was to create a series of data-rich spreads that quickly and clearly illustrate the current state of each school in order to help bring all stakeholders up to speed on the condition of their school district. This was achieved through visual breakdowns of each facility or addition’s age, space types, assessment scores per building system, and brief summaries containing diagnoses and recommendations. A series of photos for each school was also included in the report.
